If you are running Spore with Galactic Adventures, you must have updated to either Patch 5, or Patch 6 (Dr Pepper Parts Pack) for it to function correctly. If you are running Vanilla Spore, you must have Patch 3 ( no other patch will function correctly ). To get the patch, simply launch Spore. PC players will need to have EADM installed. If you didn't install the EADM when you installed Spore, you can download it here. This patch is available for both PC and Mac.
The problem is if you haven't launched SPORE after installing it, any patch you download will break the game. The same goes for Patch 4 I think it is, you must launch the game before downloading the remaining patches. After Googling for a long period of time and finding nothing, the above instructions is what worked for me.
